The Rev. W.H. Shawcross of Bretforton gave this recipe;
'Lay 1/2lb brimstone in iron dish, supported by a pair of tongs over a bucket of water, the fireplace and all openings to be closed, a shovelful of burning coal put on the brimstone, the door quickly closed and the room kept closed for six hours. This is one of the best ways of laying a ghost'.
