It seems that St. Swithun's parish was the first to have an organ or chimes. A record records 'July 17, 1661, agreement between Richard Beddoes and James Bridgs, churchwardens, on part, and Edward Gosling on the other, for six bells, with a barrel for eight bells, for the sum of £12. 24s. p.a to be paid to keep them in tune
