The Town Crier's Calls at Worcester

Worcester City employed a Crier who carries a silver topped staff, and walks a pace or two ahead of the mace-bearers when the Mayor and Corporation process. However, it is many a day since his traditional cries were last heard in the streets of Worcester. This one in the early years:

God give you good morrow, my masters, past three o'clock and a fair morning'

Worcester rose early about its work in those days, and went to bed early too. If there were some tarried, they would have heard the day's last cry as midnight strikes:

'Twelve o'clock. Look well to your locks, your fire and light, and so good night'.

Perhaps, better still, would have been the earlier admonition inviting sleep:

'List good people all. Past ten o'clock, the hour l call, Now say your prayers and take your rest with conscience  clear and sins confessed. I bid you all good night . Good Night.:
