The Bourne's were succeeded by the Bromley's, Sir Thomas, the Solicitor General, and later Lord Chancellor. He was largely responsible for Elizabeth's rejection of the suit of the French Catholic prince, the Duc d' Alencon, but especially for the fate of Mary, Queen of Scots. Parliament induced Elizabeth to sign the death warrant, and Bromley lost no time in affixing the great seal. But the strain was great, and he broke down seven days after, and two months later, at 57, he was dead and buried in Westminster Abbey. It was Lord Chancellor Bromley's eldest son Henry, who succeeded to Battenhall, and who led the search of Hindlip Hall and found eleven secret chambers.
