Charles I and Cromwell at the Lygon Arms

This inn was originally the White Hart, and the first reference to this inn, now renowed throughout the country and to tourists abroad, is in 1532.

The building is difficult to date, though the date 1620 is very clear over a Jacobean door, It is known that during the Great Civil War, both Charles 1 and Oliver Cromwell stayed here. In coaching days it was one of the premier inns in the country. The inn was purchased by the Lygon family early in the 19th century, and its name changed to the Lygon Arms
