From Workhouse to Tavern

To contrast to the Magpie above, the Farmers Arms on Kempsey Common was converted to a tavern when originally it was the parish Workhouse. In the bad old days, it was the practice to 'farm out the 'gang boss' it was truly a system of slave labour.

When the parishes combined, and the Union system of Workhouses was established, the poor went to Upton, and the building was sold, and became a tavern.
