Misc Notes on Inns

  • All Inns were formerly protected from competition of strangers and only freemen were permitted to sell ale in an 'aunciente inn'. Unlicensed alehouses would sometimes peep out, but their sign boards were immediately cut down. These signs stretched across the street in great numbers, with the gables and top stories of half-timbered houses themselves, it must have been very different appearance to today - Noake
