Roads Named After Pubs

Lion Walk, off Sansome Walk, got its name from the White Lion public house which existed there until about 1908. Hares Lane and Hounds Lane, (off Bridport, the site now occupied by the Technical College in Dean's Way) is said to have been so called after an inn, the Hare & Hounds, which existed there some time in the 17th century.

Cheshire Cheese Walk, off Foregate Street, was the approach to a ancient inn of that name which existed until 1834, when the site was used for the Atheneum, (now the Odeon Cinema).

Angel Street is believed to have received its name from an inn called the Angel. It was on the south side of the street, with an exit into Broad Street. The inn itself is said to have got its name from the fact that on the south side of the passage was the house of a religious sect in the Middle Ages, called the Trinitarians. Part of the ancient house still remains.
