The State Sword

Category: Historical Studies
The State Sword of Worcester is thirty three and a quarter inches in length, and the cross guard sixteen and a half inches. The 'black sword' belonging to the City, has the scabbard covered with black velvet, the guard, pommel and mounts are japanned black; on the scabbard, near the hilt, is an escutcheon of the older bearing, a fess between three pears, introduced on a canton in the arms. The date of this sword appears to be early 16th century. A third sword, with a flat gilded pommel, dates from about 1500.
